Boston Whaler Montauk
The 17-foot center console that became a legend.
The Boston Whaler Montauk is, for many, the Whaler. Introduced in 1973 on the proven 17-foot smirk hull, the Montauk took the small-boat formula — unsinkable foam construction, simple center console, no nonsense — and turned it into the most recognized recreational fishing boat in America.
Its profile is unmistakable: the rounded gunwales, the smirk-shaped hull, the simple console with a steering wheel and a throttle. It is equally at home running flats, trolling rips, hauling lobster pots, or ferrying kids to the swimming hole.
The classic-era Montauks (pre-2003 "Classic" hull) are now collector-grade boats. Original-paint examples in good condition routinely outsell brand-new boats of similar size — a testament to a design that refused to age.
